- I have been using ESDI hard drives on my Mega and 1040 computers for
- over 4 months now and have had absolutely no problems with the hardware
- or software described in this document. I assume NO responsibility for
- any loss and/or damage of or to hardware or software as a result of
- attempting this project. Sorry, I hate it when I say things like that.
-
- Attaching ESDI drives (which appear to be more and more abundant these
- days) to your Mega or ST computer is actually quite straight forward.
- Using the same techniques set forth in the documentation supplied with
- your ICD ST Host Adapter, however, you should substitute the following:
-
- 1) Rather than using the ST506 controller (ie. Adaptec 4000
- or XEBEC 1410, etc.) use an Adaptec 4520. This controller
- is a SCSI to ESDI Controller.
-
- 2) Use the OLDER CCS formatter from ICD as the controller
- formatting module (I have included it in this ARC with
- the name CCS4520.FMT. I suggest you keep it named this
- way so you can have both around). This module will work
- fine with then new formatting program (ICDFMT.PRG) - BUT
- the new CCS.FMT will NOT work with the 4520.
-
- Hardware:
-
- Assemble the hardware as you would with the ST506 type interfacing. All
- cables and connections are the same.
-
- The ONLY jumper you should have installed on the Adaptec 4520 is the
- one connecting G-H. Note: if you have the 4520 document, what I have
- just stated CONTRADICTS what the manual attempts to explain about
- this jumber relative to 4000 compatibility. Save yourself the grief
- and do it this way! I have tried just about all possible combinations
- of jumper settings and software drivers - this works....
-
- Software:
-
- Install your drive and its parameters into the ICDFMT.DAT file. I have
- included the one that I use in this arc and it has two entries for the
- 4520 controller. One is set up for 17 sectors and the other is set up
- for 34 sectors (I have both types of drives). Note: There are also a
- couple of new drives that I have added to this data file other than
- ESDI drives so it differs from ICD's version a little.
-
- Now just format and partition your drive as you normally would using
- your drive designator and one of the 4520 controllers.
-
- Conclusion:
-
- As I have said, I have been using this setup for quite a while and it
- all works as advertised. The two types of drives are 80meg Hitachi and
- 130meg NEC's.
